Virtual 5k and I didn't puke

Web walking-blue-pants_300

I joined in for the Take your pants for a walk challenge at http://healthywealthandwisenotbutlearning.blogspot.com/

The 5k was scheduled for the 27th and I had not technically done a 5k for it, even though I had about a week to do so. Sure, I had walked a 5k every day, but that wasn't what I wanted to do. When I saw a post from Julie telling us that we had until Sunday night (tonight) to do this challenge and get back to her I was pretty excited. This meant that I could hold it off until I had a day off work and then do it at my leisure.

For hours I thought about it and decided that I just couldn't procrastinate any longer. I had signed up for this and I knew that I wouldn't be happy if I had put it off. The good part for me was that there was no timing pressure. We were to just complete a 5k, even if we crawled. I would have to run it, because I was not in the mood to crawl for hours, at least not in public.

The luckiest man in the world decided to take a nap and there came my opening. I threw on my fancy running clothes, because everyone runs faster in the proper attire, and I fancied my way down to the treadmill. That machine had forgotten who I was, because it had been so long.

For the first time ever I remembered to do my 5 minute warm-up and then reset the treadmill. No sense counting those slower minutes, right? People kept walking by the window, because I live in a condo and these people were all checking in. (oh how that irritates me when they look at me) At one point some guy was sticking his face to the window talking to me as I was running. I am pretty sure he was asking me if I wanted the lights on. #1 I am running here and not really in the mood to have a conversation through the glass. #2 The door is locked so you can't come in and turn the light on anyhow. #3 Seriously, you are sticking your face up to the window?

I threw that treadmill into high gear and I ran. It felt really good as I kept running. I remember how happy I was to get past 5 minutes without slowing down. I started believing that I could actually run a full mile without stopping; it had been weeks since I had done that. My pace was under 10 minutes and if I didn't know better I would have thought the darn thing was broken.

There I was  panting   in my zone when I noticed that my shoe felt loose. With less than 2 minutes to go ....yikes....

Totally blurry picture, but it shows how much of a hurry I was in to get back to running. I did pause the treadmill long enough to tighten that bad boy up and wipe my brow. In all honesty, I did pause it for the other pictures as well, but I promise I was really fast about it.

Here is what mile #1 looked like

Can you say Personal record??  WOOHOO I cannot tell you all how excited I was. Another wipe of the brow, a sloppy drink from my water, and I continued on. Another minute passed and I thought to myself. "I can finish now. Tomorrow I can do a 5k. There is no need to rush."

 And I kept running.

People continued to walk by and I made a game with myself. When I saw people coming I would run at 6.5-7.0 so that they would think that I was awesome. When they were gone I would lower it down to 5.0 and just cruise. The people never seemed to leave. grumble grumble insert cuss word

I made it to 2 miles...  SAY WHAT ?!?!?!

After that two miles I felt like I had hit a wall. This is where I want to stop looking at the numbers and stare at them all at the same time. Yeah, you can't do both. I chug some water and wonder if I can pour it down my top without making a mess. I'm slowly losing my mind as I hang onto the handrail and feel like I am cheating, but my feet are moving so I know I'm not.

By now I know approximately how long it takes me for each of those tenths of a mile. I start counting the steps and the seconds in my head. Ten minutes to go....nine minutes to go. Slowed down a little and it seemed like twelve minutes to go. My mind started playing it's games with me. "slow down, you will still have a good time".

 I slowed down.

 I sped back up.

Oh man.. I thought I was going to puke.

Oh my gosh..  I can't do it.

I think I started chanting. "I'm going to puke...I'm going to puke" Probably not the best mantra; I'll have to work on that.

Three minutes to go... oh my head hurt. So close to the end when I realize that darn last tenth I would have to do. The longest minute for me. What is up with that? Can't we just have 3 mile races?

I remembered reading about how so many women have a goal to run a 5k under 30 minutes and to see that within my reach was really hard to believe. I pushed it faster and counted my steps, one two three four, pleading with my little feet to get it done.

Those little feet with the tightly tied shoelaces came through for me, and I was so happy.

3.1 miles in 29:45
Where was my audience now?

You can see here that I had to pump it up to 7.1 to get it done.

So yes, on July 27th, exactly 2 months after my 48th birthday (not really sure why I am throwing that out there)  I took my pants off for a run.

When I finished I was a hot mess

shower time

Thank you Julie for the invitation !!

Saturday (August 4th) I get to try it all over again for the Sweat your thorns off Virtual run. You can read about it here 3rd-annual-sweat-your-thorns-off

I will be happy with any time and not pushing for the same results. You can all remind me that I said this.

The Too Tired to Think Meme, Part 1

I followed the thief Diva to the Sunday Stealing Blog for a new Meme.

Click the link below to join in, after you enjoy my answers.

The Too Tired to Think Meme, Part 1

We are asked these 25 questions and apparently there will be 25 another day.

1. You have 10 dollars and need to buy snacks at a gas station. What do you get?

A 3 Musketeer, Snickers, Almond Joy, Mounds (all king size if possible), and a 32 oz Diet Coke. If I have leftover I am trying a bag of the dried fruit I saw today.

2. If you were reincarnated as a sea creature, what would you want to be?

I would want to be a Dolphin.

3. Who’s your favorite redhead?

My aunt Sally. She was a wonderful lady.

4. What do you order when you’re at IHOP?

Very rarely go there. Would probably order 2 eggs, toast, sausage, and coffee. That is my normal breakfast food at restaurant. (unless it's Waffle House, than it's a biscuit instead of toast and hashbrowns covered, smothered, and chunked)

5. Last book you read?

(not counting the naughty e-book that I read last week)

Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep   (currently reading book #2  Kiss of Frost)

6. Describe your mood.

Mostly a good mood. I am a little frustrated with my walking partner and trying to think of a way to dump her. I am also distracted lately as I worry about my father's upcoming heart surgery.

7. Describe the last time you were injured.

Oh,  goodie.. I get to talk about the jellyfish injury yet again. Stepped on a jellyfish almost 2 years ago, while walking on the beach. I put out both arms to catch myself as I fell to the ground. You can read about it here

8. Of all your friends, who would you want to be stuck in a well with?

Other than the luckiest man in the world?

I keep thinking and I am coming up blank. Dang, do I even have any friends? Now my mood just changed to depressed, so I am moving on.

9. Rock concert or symphony?

 Rock concert

10. What is the wallpaper of your cell phone? The number? (We'll just say "hi" - promise.)

It was this when I started answering these questions last night ...

This morning I changed it to this, because it's all about me ya-know.

The number?   (255-226-8863) Don't call... it spells out ALL ABOUT ME

11. Favorite soda?

Diet Coke - I find it hard to believe that is my favorite soda, but it's true.

12. What type of shirt are you wearing?

  Tank top, with stripes.

13. If you could only use one form of transportation?

I want to walk. How far are we going? (I have logged 1610 miles so far this year)

14. Most recent movie you have watched in theater?

Battleship. Had free tickets to a screening.

15. Name an actor/actress/singer you have had the hots for.

He is neither of these, but I have a crush on Curtis Stone.

16. What’s your favorite kind of cake?

Carrot cake. Mine. Here is the recipe

17. What did you have for dinner last night?

Prime rib, baked potatoes, and steamed vegetables.

18. Look to your left, what do you see?

I see the luckiest man in the world, sleeping resting in his recliner.

19. Do you untie your shoes when you take them off?

No. I untie them before I put them on.

20. Favorite toy as a child?

First thing that comes to mind is jacks.

21. Do you buy your own groceries?

22. Do you think people talk about you behind your back?

  Sure

23. When was the last time you had gummy worms?

Sometime this year. the bears are the best, but they aren't as good as they used to be.

24. What’s your favorite fruit?

Bing cherries, with bananas a close second.

NEARLY LOST MY HEAD

I have come to the realization that you have to use pictures to explain things sometimes. When you don't have pictures, you have to do whatever you can to get your point across. Today I am going to share with you something that I have never done before.
For my readers, I have doodled.

Yesterday I was cleaning at work, using a long pole with a spiderweb thing on the end. (I forget what it is called) This is a picture of it so that you can understand what I mean.

See how happy I am? This is a very handy tool to get the places that I can't reach.

There I was, strolling along... la  la  la...  going about my business and all of the sudden

ACKKKKKKKKKKKKK

I WALKED INTO A DOORWAY AND GOT STUCK

YUP..that's red cheeks right there. Even though nobody could see me (I hope), I was embarrassed. You will be happy to know that I was not injured.

Now you can go back to doing what you were doing.

HAPPY MONDAY !!

I PROMISE NOT TO SING

Recently I read a blog post and they were offering a chance to win a ticket and lodging to Brandcation in Pigeon Forge. You can read about it here, but please don't enter because that will lesson my chances of winning.

 What is Brandfluential?

Honestly, I had to use Google to even know where Pigeon Forge is. It isn't as close as Pensacola, but it's still within driving distance. Bonus points for that. WOOHOO (does it matter that I would not actually drive?)

Maybe I will fly

Perhaps I am premenopausal super sensitive lately, but every time I have seen a post about this giveaway I have felt tears in my eyes. I am not sure why it makes me so emotional, but I am going to try and explain it.

I have been writing in my blog for about 18 months. The reason that I started it was to stay accountable for my fitness goals. It has served its purpose well. This year I have logged over 1500 miles. That's accountability right there folks !! For goodness sakes, I even starting running, and I wasn't even being chased.

Lately I have been wanting to write reviews for products that I have been using. So many things have been sent to be through survey sites and Klout perks. I believe that I owe these companies the courtesy of writing a review.

Not only do my time management skills suck lately, but I don't really have enough people reading my blog to make a difference with my reviews. Without a doubt, Brandcation would be a great way for me to learn how to get the word out and to improve my blog. Not only would I meet an amazing group of women (you know who you are), but I would gain a wealth of information.

Interaction with other women is exactly what I need. My guy is amazing and he really does a great job of listening to me, but good golly Miss Dolly I need some women to talk to.

I need this; I really do.

You can't feel the excitement in my words, but darn it, I AM EXCITED !!!

I wrote myself a post it and stuck it on my laptop that reads ENTER THE BRANDCATION CONTEST. Every day I have looked at it and I felt a flutter in my chest. It either means that I need to get back to the doctor and get some meds for my thyroid or this is really meant to be.

Yeah, I got that same feeling once when I bought a lottery ticket and it was a fluke. (haha) That can't possibly happen to me twice in one lifetime could it???

Am I rambling? Just a few more things to mention and I will be done.

My fried shrimp recipe

For Independence Day we had shrimp overload.
It was a beautiful day.

Here is my step by step instructions for my fried shrimp.
You get photo aids and video aids, how lucky is that?

(crossing fingers that these all upload)

Step One

Get your shrimp. These have the heads on still.  EEEWWW

Step Two

Now our shrimp has been peeled, so we are ready to remove the veins.

They look so much friendlier without their heads

Poop be gone !!

My shrimp are laying out on the cutting board and I am ready to beat on them a little

And this is how I do it

It is time to crack one egg and smash some crackers.
I used a sleeve of Ritz crackers and these are the spices that I added.
You will want to use the spices to your own liking. I don't use much.

cayenne pepper (little bit), paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper

You probably don't need a video here, but you are getting it.

It is time to cook these little guys. I used to do it in a pan.
That took forever, so I don't do that anymore.

Pull out that deep fryer and heat it up folks.

How pretty is that??

AND THERE THEY ARE, GOLDEN BROWN AND READY TO EAT

DON'T FORGET TO CLEAN UP!!

LET ME KNOW IF YOU TRY THIS RECIPE.

July photo of the day

For now, I am not posting my daily pictures for May through June. It would involved way too much time and I just don't have any to spare. It is a new month, so that means I get to start anew.

This morning I took a walk and this is what I saw.

It was really a beautiful day on the beach.

After my walk I came home to do a little Zumba on my Wii.

Tonight I saw a listing for July ideas at #photoaday and the suggestion for today was self portrait.
Well, I can't resist the chance of sharing me.. so here is what I looked like after my hot walk on the beach.

That's all I have for today.

Tomorrow we are taking a trip to Biloxi.

I hope we win some money !!
