Six days worth

Like so many others, I have fallen behind on the Summer blog Challenge.
Here are some quick answers to get me back up to speed.
 Days 20-25

--  Little me

Grandpa holding the twins (me with the hat)

-- Recent words of wisdom.
 From my dear friend.
It could be a quote, but I heard it from her.

It's easy to be positive in a positive situation. It's being positive in a negative situation that makes the difference.

-- When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a teacher.
Now I want to be a school girl. (heh)

-- Share a post you've written in the past that you like.

Here is the link to a post I wrote last year.

      I USED TO...

--Favorite eco-friendly thing to do.

Hang clothes on the line.

--Ideal day of "me" time.

I love my time on the beach, and that is were I am heading right now.

Something that I am proud of

Summer Blog Challenge from day 19

--Something you're proud of from the last few days.

Earlier this month we were asked to post our short term goals for June. Here is the link to my  short term goals

The first goal was to run.... and I did that. (sort of)
MJ and I were at Hurlburt getting me a daily pass and I reminded him that it was National running day. He reassured me that he could still run and together we ran to the car. (he cracks me up)
Although he insisted that this fulfills my goal, I did run over a mile on the treadmill later that evening.

Another goal was to read two books this month. A few months ago I had won a box of books from a blogger, so I picked up a book and started reading. Here is my choice.

Book Description

July 26, 2011 Mythos Academy
Gwen Frost is an outsider at Mythos Academy, a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword. Gwen is an outsider both to the students of the Academy and the rest of the world. But when her gift of psychometry - the ability to know an object's history just by touching it reveals dark undercurrents and danger afoot, she has no choice but to get involved. (courtesy of Amazon.com)

I really enjoyed this book, and I have the second one waiting on our kindle. Apparently there is a third book as well. Wasn't that tricky?

I had a goal to try a new recipe and I made homemade chicken noodle soup with dumplings. We absolutely loved how this turned out. You can click here to read about my Chicken noodle soup

The biggest challenge was to clean the closet in the spare bedroom.

TA DA !!!!
Before and after pictures.
I am so proud of myself.

Yup, that is my swimsuit collection.

I still have one more goal to tackle.
The plan was to upload my daily pictures for the 365 project. That has not happened and I am really not so sure that it will, mostly because I can't imagine uploading the nearly 60 photos that I am behind on.
It would mean that I have to look through every picture taken and decide which on to use for each day. Although, this would be a great way for me to get rid of the bad pictures as well.   WE SHALL SEE.
I am proud of what I have accomplished this month. How about you?

Day 18 for the Summer Blog Hop

I can't believe it took me so long to do this.
Last week I made homemade chicken noodle soup.

Since I figured I would remember how to make this I tossed out the printed recipe. This is what you call.. "winging it"  lol... chicken... winging it... get it???

You get to add whatever you want to make it your own.

I started with the biggest pot that I had and a whole chicken that I had cleaned.

Added a lot of water.. some salt, pepper and garlic powder.
Brought it to a boil and cooked it until done. If I remember correctly it took about 90 minutes. It depends on the size of your chicken, so you have to check it and see when it is done.

After the chicken is done.. you remove it from the water and let it cool. Strain that water and save it.

I diced up some carrots, onion, and celery.
Again.. you get to decide how much you use.
I did about 4 carrots, 4 celery, and half of an onion.

Using the same big pot that I cooked the chicken, I put half of the water back in and added 6 cups of chicken broth. Add your vegetables to this and cook over medium heat until cooked. The recipe that I had said that the water would boil down and to keep adding more of the saved water that you used for the chicken. Mine didn't cook down too much and my vegetables were done within 20 minutes.

Instead of putting my egg noodles in with the vegetables I used the leftover chicken water, plus some of this vegetable water and I cooked the egg noodles in a separate pan with that.
(did that make sense?)

The picture here shows dumplings that I decided to make, using my Bisquick received for a survey. We LOVED those dumplings.

I tore up that chicken after it cooked, chopped it up, and put 3/4 of it in with the vegetables and dumplings, and the other 1/4 in with the cooked noodles. I didn't need to do that, but I wanted to explain why you see chicken in here with the noodles. We did end up mixing it all together.

And there you have it.

Fitness guru or couch potato?

Summer Blog Challenge day 16
--Fitness guru or couch potato?

I strive to be a guru, but it hasn't happened yet. My favorite activity is walking. Can a person be addicted to walking? If so, I am pretty sure that I am.

Last year I found a group of bloggers that had a challenge to walk 400 miles for 2011. It is the reason that I started writing my blog.  I walked 1400 miles, I think.

This year I made a goal to walk 1800 miles, but secretly I made another goal to walk 2012, since it is the year 2012 and a lot of people were doing this.

As of today I have logged 1343 miles, so I am well on my way to reaching my goal.

Here are my daily totals for the past 30 days.

Here are my stats for the past year.

Do I do anything else? Eh, not so much, but I really want to. I love my Just Dance and Zumba for my Wii Fit, but I don't do them as often as I should.

There is a facebook page that I joined and every month they have a new calendar for us to follow, with a new routine every day. I thinking I did about 2 weeks faithfully and that was it.

I have won many fitness Cds and I pull one out every so often.

Perhaps I need to set a new fitness goal for myself.

How about you?  Couch potato or fitness Guru?

Summer Blog Challenge day 14

1.   Make goals for yourself and be exact.
example: instead of saying "I will drink more water" you could say "I will drink 8 glasses of water per day".

  2.  Laugh at yourself.
Chances are there is somebody else laughing at you, and you wouldn't want them to be alone would you?

  3. Take time every day for yourself to do something that you love.
It could be as simple as putting on a favorite song and singing or dancing along.

  4. Hold your tongue when you are upset with somebody and take a breath.
So many times we say things in anger and wish that we could take them back.

  5. If you love somebody, make sure that you tell them.

  6. Make your bed as soon as you get up.
You will feel so much better when you walk into that room later in the day.

  7. If you are getting overwhelmed with emails, unsubscribe to those mailings that you find yourself deleting without opening.
Do you really need 5 daily deal sites?

  8. Add something new to your hobby so it doesn't get stale.
(read various authors, try a new recipe, listen to another genre, walk a different route)

  9. Step outside of your comfort zone. You will LOVE how you feel after you do it.

10. Spend the day in your pajamas.
(Just putting this here because I want to do it)

11. Believe in yourself. Chances are... you really can do what you are afraid to try.
This will help you to do #9.

12. Spend time with a child and learn a little from their happiness.

13. If somebody in your life is always negative, I believe that it is OK to stay away from them.

14. Reward yourself for those goals that you achieve.
You deserve it.

15. Last, but not least ...

How I see myself by the end of the year

Summer Blog Challenge day 13

I see myself very much the same as now, extremely happy with my life.

~  I will have at least another 1000 miles walked or ran by then.

~  Maybe I'll even lose a few pounds, because I will certainly be working out more.

~  I will be regularly utilizing my cleaning schedule and trying a new recipe at least three more times.

~  I see myself reading more and making monthly goals for myself.

yup.. that's about it .

The worst injury I've had and how it happened

Summer Blog Challenge day 12

I was walking on the beach one December day, enjoying the nice cool air. One step landed on top of a moon jelly fish that was minding it's own business on the sand. A piece of the jellyfish stuck to my shoe and when I took my next step I slipped, and fell forward.

In my right hand I carried my cell phone, so I gripped it tight to save it. My left hand did the same with my MP3 player. I put both arms out straight and flexed my wrists to catch myself. I landed on the sand, hitting the ground harder than I had ever hit the ground in my life.

My first thoughts went to the goodies that I had protected in my grip. Everything seemed undamaged and I was happy for that. After leaping up to my feet I immediately searched the area for onlookers. I saw a family close by, and I studied their faces to see if they had caught my tumble. It seemed that they were too involved in their own lives to notice my dance with the sand.

I did what every normal person does these days and I sent this post to my facebook wall..

NOTE TO SELF..if you step on a jelly fish, you fall down and go BOOM ~ouch

The pain came quickly and I decided that it was best to head back home and ice my wrists.

For weeks I looked like this ---

That's a wrap

It made me so sad when I realized the things that I could not do, even though you can't tell by the look on my face in this photo. Preparing meals was so very hard to do. Thank goodness I have the luckiest man in the World who lives with me, and helped me in so many ways. I can't even begin to list here all of the things that I couldn't do anymore. My laptop went into mourning and I think that my shoes took secret walks alone while I slept.

With no medical insurance I was determined to just keep my wrists wrapped and let them heal. Nearly a month passed before I decided to suck it up and head in to the medical center and get checked out. The X-Ray showed no broken bones, but that didn't mean that there weren't any. (gee thanks) The only way to know if I had torn ligaments was to do an MRI and there is no way that I could afford that.

My doctor brought in two braces for me to use. They would cost $75 each. I started hyperventilating (nearly) and begged them to remove the braces because I couldn't possibly pay for them. She actually gave them to me for free. I hugged her and cried and I promised to not tell anyone, so you all must forget that you read this part.

It has now been nearly a year and a half since the jellyfish attacked me. I am pretty sure that I have ligament damage or tendon damage, or both. Most of the time I am pain free, but there are always going to be things that irritate them. As I get older I am convinced that I will have arthritis in both wrists. The heat and high humidity causes my wrists and hands to swell, and that is going to make for a long summer. Other than that, I think I'm going to be just fine.

Do you have a cooking disaster?

Summer Blog Challenge Day 9

--Talk about a cooking disaster.

I am a good cook, definitely a good cook.

My first Thanksgiving dinner I was so upset because they didn't include the giblets with my turkey. Five hours later I realize that they did include them, I just didn't know where to find them. OOPS !

A few weeks ago I made a rotisserie chicken in the oven. Because it was sitting in an inch of grease, (YUCK) I had decided to transfer it into my favorite Rubbermaid cooking dish and I went for a walk.

When I returned home there was broken glass all over the floor. Apparently you can cook in the "cookware", but you cannot transfer hot food into it. We were still able to enjoy a lot of the chicken, and now I need a new container.

Yeah, I'm a good cook.

My guilty pleasure

Summer Blog Challenge Day 8

--Other than blogging, what's my guilty pleasure?

I would have to say entering giveaways. Last year I won probably three times a week. A lot more people enter giveaways now, thanks to Rafflecopter, so it is harder to win. This year I have been working three days a week and walking an average of 60 miles a week, so giveaways have been pushed a little further down my priority list.

I have won 3 swimsuits, $300 to Sports Authority, $50 Visa from Coke, $100 to Paypal, A pillow worth $125 (I LOVE this pillow), A mattress pad that cools you down, 2 bedbug mattress pads, various toys, clothing, multiple pair of shoes, many books, George Foreman grill..on and on and on.

Here are some pictures from my photo albums.

Photo of something that makes me happy

Summer Blog Challenge Day 7

A lot of things make me happy, so I am going to randomly pick one thing.

Walking on the beach makes me happy. Going to this broken barrier wall, where it is so quiet, really makes me happy.

Nicknames I have & why I have them

Summer Blog Challenge Day 6

I don't have any cute nicknames, but I do have two. It always makes me laugh on facebook , because people refer to me by my nicknames and I am sure that it confuses others.

The first nickname is Roni, or Ronnie if my mother spells. Here is the story behind that name.

When I was born they did not have a name chosen for me. My twin bother was born and they already knew that they wanted to name him after our uncle. I was a surprise and the hospital told my family that they didn't have to name me because I probably wouldn't live. At least this is the story that I remember. (HOW RUDE)

My brother John had his name and they needed something to rhyme with it. They also knew that they wanted my name to start with the letter "R", because I have two older sister's with an "R" at the beginning our their names.

Out of the blue my father comes up with the name Ronalee. (Nope, that doesn't rhyme, Dad) They decide that they will call us Roni and Johnny. (again..Ronnie if my mother spells it)

Growing up I was always called Roni. John, on the other hand threw a fit when we were very young and wouldn't let people call him Johnny, so they never did. I just found this out a few months ago when I asked my sister why the whole Roni/Johnny thing never really happened. (I call "no fair" on that)

Nobody called me Ronalee when I was growing up, and it felt so good when I moved away in my 20''s and got to introduce myself as Ronalee instead of Roni.

When the little kids couldn't pronounce my name I became Aunt Roni, so I was stuck with it again. I love my birth name and I wish that the family would use it.

When people from my childhood write on my facebook wall, they often call me Roni. I guess that is how they remember me, so I don't complain. It's better than "shorty". (Maybe they forgot that one )

I have another nickname and it is "Rose" or "Rosie".
This is a shorter explanation.

I am a chatter online and have been a member of AOL for nearly 20 years. About 10 years ago I made a screen name with Rose in it. People from AOL are also friends of mine on Facebook, and some are now real- time friends. They call me Rose when they comment on my wall. Some call me Rosie (because they must really really like me),  and that is where part of my blog name comes from.

MJ has many nicknames for me ... too many to list.

Short term goals for this month

Summer Blog Challenge Day 5

I have been reading through blog posts today and decided that I had better pull myself away to do my post for day five before I let other people influence me.

As I was reading I kept thinking to myself "I want to do that too", but I know that I really can't do EVERYTHING.

Off the top of my head, here are some short term goals for this month.

For starters, tomorrow I will run, because it is National running day. How can I not?!?

I will upload all of the photos that I took in May for my project 366. They will finally find their home on my blog. I will also begin posting my June photos daily. This really shouldn't be so hard to do.

I will read two books before the end of the month. As I mentioned in my 15 facts about me, I used to be quite the reader. MJ and I would go to the library every two weeks. I would check out an average of seven books and return them finished the next time we went. It has been months since I have read a book, and at least a year since we have gone to the library.  GASP

I will find a new recipe to cook this month. It tickles me when I add something new to my pile of index cards. (That's how I keep the recipes organized) Last month my delicious find was cheesy potato soup. You can find the recipe right here POTATO SOUP RECIPE  I can't wait to see what I decide to try this month. You will find out when I do if you continue to read my blog.

And now for the biggest challenge that I do not want to do.

I will clean the bedroom closet. (sigh)
There, I put it in writing, and now it must happen.

Back to reading all of the other blogs. It's been a lot of fun.

15 interesting facts about me

Summer Blog Challenge Day 3

1. I love photography and I try to take my camera with me, wherever I go. I also love walking and it is getting very hard to find a balance between these two hobbies. Not easy to walk when you want to stop and take pictures all the time. (is walking a hobby?)

2. I have a twin brother who was born three minutes before me. They didn't even know I was there until I made my entrance. (surprise !!)  I lived 1500 miles away from him when he broke his hand and the time that he dislocated his shoulder, and I felt the pain. I gave birth three times, so I think that we are even now.

3. Both of my baby toes curl over the other toes. When I was very young my mother took me to the doctor and they taped them down. I guess they thought that eventually the tendons would stretch and they would stay that way. After we left the doctor I found it very hard to walk. Instead of just removing the tape, my mom carried me to the bus. I don't remember many things from when I was little, but I can remember her carrying me that day.
4. When I was in 3rd grade I was in the hospital to have my bladder and kidneys checked.  I lied to the doctor when he asked me if it hurt. After I returned to school from that hospital visit, my teacher lectured me for not thanking the class for their gifts. I felt guilty for a very long time for fibbing to the doctor and for not thanking my classmates.

5. At the age of 23, I divorced my first husband, gave up custody of our two daughters, and moved 1500 miles away.  They grew up without their mom.

6. I re-married and had a third daughter. She taught me how to love myself again.

7. My three girls are all adults now, and I have an amazing relationship with each of them.  My oldest daughter has given me two awesome grandsons.

8. After 15 years of marriage, I left my second husband and moved 2000 miles away. He went into hiding and we still have not divorced. (It has been ten years)

9. I have lived in 5 different states. (Nebraska, Arkansas, California, Pennsylvania, and Florida)

10. I am left handed when I write and eat, but I use my right hand for almost everything else. I recently realized that I use both hands when I sweep and mop. When I play tennis (or table tennis) I am always switching hands.

11. December of 2010 I slipped on a moon jellyfish and sprained both my wrists. I love telling that story. It took a very long time to heal up from that and I will always have troubles with my wrists.

12. I met my guy in an AOL chat room in 2003. He is my soul-mate and treats me like a woman should be treated. We had a long distance relationship for 4 years and have been living together now for 5 years.

13. Sometimes I read a book in one day, and sometimes I go months without reading at all. It makes me sad that I don't read anymore, but I find it hard to tear myself away from the Internet.

14. We have a condo in Florida and a house in Nebraska. In 2010 I spent half the year at each place.  I went up to Nebraska to sell the house this year and we decided to rent it out instead. It makes me much happier to stay in Florida and not bounce back and forth.

15. I can wiggle my ears.

I found this site while looking for an ear wiggle GIF

Day #4

THE MEANING BEHIND MY BLOG NAME

                     It's a secret
                     (sweet smile)
